Diatomaceous earth--good for human consumption?

Diatomaceous earth, familiar to me as an additive to potting soil and as an insect repellent, is being promoted as beneficial to humans in "food-grade" form as a food supplement. Berkeley Wellness Letter (April 6, 2017) advises caution:
