Disappearing caladium photo
« on: July 18, 2017, 08:36:08 am »
For many years there was a photo of a caladium plant at the top of the page. I worked at getting that photo the right size and in the right spot. I was really pleased when I finally got it the way I wanted it.

There was no particular reason for a caladium plant photo to head up an MS Website like this. I just liked the photo, liked the plant, and wanted something attractive-looking there.

I logged in here today and it wasn't there. Instead there was big ugly notice from Photobucket about "3rd-party hosting."

I went to Photobucket and learned that for images I've stored on Photobucket to be transferrable to other Websites or forums, I'd need to pay $40/month for what was always free in the past.

So I've removed that caladium image and it won't be back.  I like the look of the page without the image, actually.

When I first found the Internet, there were ways of getting an Internet connection for free. For instance, there was the Internet service provider called Freeinet, whose motto was "Because the Internet was meant to be free."

I liked that motto. (Freeinet went under long ago.)

You got only about 10 hours a month of (dial-up) Internet access, and there were ad banners in the way, but it was free.

By now many Websites are finding out they can charge for various features that were free in the past. And that's what they're doing. >:( >:( >:(
