These researchers are saying that the disease-modifying therapies currently available for MS have a well established record of delaying a worsening of disability in RRMS but that they do not delay the transition to SPMS. From PubMed, August 10, 2018:

SPMS, diagnosed 1980. Avonex 2001-2004. Copaxone 2007-2010. Glatopa (glatiramer acetate 40mg 3 times/week) since 12/16/20.
