Epstein-Barr virus found to trigger MS (Scientific American)
« on: January 29, 2022, 09:51:52 pm »

This article in Scientific American (January 13, 2022), entitled "Epstein-Barr Virus Found to Trigger MS," presents findings indicating that Epstein-Barr virus, which 95% of the population is thought to have had, triggers MS. We still have to wonder why the other people who have supposedly had EBV don't get MS...but the research is probably significant because Scientific American doesn't usually waste space on unimportant material.

An exchange in the "Letters" section of Brain & Live (August-September 2022), which comes from the American Academy of Neurology (AAN):

https://www.brainandlife.org/letters/august-september-2022

It is captioned "Epstein-Barr and MS":

Quote
As a scientist with a solid background in statistics, I thought the conclusion drawn in the Ask Your Neurologist column about the Epstein-Barr virus and multiple sclerosis (MS) (June/July 2022)—that the virus is the leading cause of MS—was not supported by the data in the Science study. I'm not questioning that the virus is an important variable in the development of MS, but the numbers in the study don't seem to add up to it being the leading cause. —Martha Woods, PhD, Denver, CO

THE EDITOR RESPONDS: The study in Science led by Dr. Alberto Ascherio provides compelling evidence of causality between the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and multiple sclerosis (MS) and suggests that cases of MS could be prevented by stopping EBV infection.
