Theory about spike in MS cases in Iran
« on: July 12, 2016, 06:08:07 am »
This article appeared in 2013  in Smithsonian but escaped my notice till now. Some Oxford University researchers have come up with a theory that an increase in the number of MS cases in Iran is due to the stricter dress requirements that went into effect during the 1979 revolution in that country. The stricter dress codes made more modest clothes mandatory for women--and would have cut down on those women's exposure to sunlight, leading to a vitamin D deficiency and perhaps to the increase in MS.

As the authors themselves say, the theory is only speculative--and there's no similar way of accounting for the rise in MS cases in several other countries. Maybe the medical system in some countries is simply becoming more alert to cases of MS and more adept at diagnosing them.

The article can be seen here.
