I've never worked for a place that required me to wear high heels, but maybe they were required and I just didn't know it. It was pretty much expected that a woman would wear high heels on most jobs back then.

In fact in high school we had a Senior Dressup Day every Friday--the idea being that we were about to present ourselves to the working world, and we needed to get in the habit of dressing for our jobs. It went without saying that on Fridays the senior girls wore high heels. It was just assumed.

But now, in the UK, a firm can be fined for requiring a woman to wear high heels.

Not only are high heels silly and impractical--they are always bad for your feet. They can be costly too. The flimsy soles give out easily, and you need to repair or replace those high heeled shoes often.

In this article from BBC News (January 27), we also learn that women have reported "demands they should wear shorter skirts and unbutton blouses for male Christmas shoppers."
