Elizabeth Warren called "Pocahontas"
« on: November 29, 2017, 06:55:11 am »
Donald Trump has managed to turn an event honoring Native Americans into an opportunity to insult Senator Elizabeth Warren:

I pay attention to Elizabeth Warren. She's been working hard to protect the rights of the American consumer. I've read her book. I'm aware that she hasn't pulled out any actual proof that she has some Native American ancestry.

But why should she have to?  Why isn't this issue irrelevant? Why isn't race pretty much a non-issue by now? Who among us really knows what our racial mix is?  Any of us could turn out to have an ancestor who might have been an African American or a Native American. Or whatever. Back in the mists of long-ago time, accurate records are hard to come by.

The whole concept of "race" is an artificial construct. There are human beings, and we happen to have skins of various colors, a wide variety of physical features--curly hair, straight hair, in-between wavy hair; noses of many shapes; long limbs, short limbs; eyelids in a variety of configurations; and so on.

Maybe it's time to put "race" as an idea onto a back shelf and just move on.
