Researchers in the MS field are paying closer attention to brain atrophy now, as is pointed out in this segment of an editorial in JAMA Neurology, June 13, 2016  (the first page of the editorial is reproduced below):

The same issue of JAMA Neurology contains an article, "Disability-Specific Atlases of Gray Matter Loss in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis."
