Title: (US) New nutrition label
Post by: agate on May 20, 2016, 03:42:52 pm
There's going to be a new version of the nutrition label on food in the US. New information is the "added sugar"--the sugar added to the food, not counting the sugar already in that food.  The calorie count is now in much bigger and bolder type too.

Potassium and vitamin D are now required listings.

The food industry has until July 2018 to update its labels, however. Consumers are being eased into this in a very leisurely way.

Medical News Today (May 23) has an article explaining the changes:

JAMA (June 6, 2016) contains a "Viewpoint" article by authors from the Harvard School of Public Health, about the new label, applauding the changes but seeing a need for improvement still.

The article, "The Revised Nutrition Facts Label: A Step Forward and More Room for Improvement," can be seen here (http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleID=2527877).
