Both the President and the Vice President of the US thought that the NRA convention was worthy of their time and so both showed up and addressed those assembled.

The Vice President was regarded as such an important figure that his safety had to be protected. Guns were banned from the event when Pence addressed the NRA.

The question arose in the minds of some people, particularly anyone affected by, for example, the Parkland school shooting: If guns are so dangerous that the Vice President must be protected from them, why don't US schoolchildren deserve the same protection?
