This comment in the New Yorker (October 24) was written before the US election. This is the guy we just elected, a misogynist:
At the second Presidential debate, Trump declared Clinton a fighter. But what she’s had to fight all along is sexism like his.
He happened to have inherited a lot of money, and then he went on to make so much more money that it boggles the mind.
And with that money he seems to have bought himself a ticket to the White House--and the House and Senate are in his pocket as well.
He has exploited a huge weakness in our system--the fact that money can buy just about anything if you have enough of it.
His finger will be on that button that will destroy us all. In another sense, but more slowly, he will probably be responsible for a far more rapid destruction of this planet than would have happened without this win of his.
Notice how much media coverage Trump was getting throughout the campaign? You saw many many scenes where Trump was addressing a crowd, didn't you?
He bought that media coverage.
It can be done and it probably was done.
There are enough women in this country who still believe that women aren't up to doing "a man's job"--or what has up to now been considered a man's job--that they probably voted for Trump.
I'm glad I wasn't among them.
